On Tuesday, Paddy Crerand – who won the European Cup and made over 300 appearances for the club between 1963 and 1971 – seemed to inadvertently let slip that an agreement has already been reached between the player and United.
The 77-year-old was speaking to MUTV presenter Mark Sullivan on The Paddy Crerand Show and said: 'You know something as well which happened today that nobody has mentioned? And I’m delighted he has signed another contract: Michael Carrick. He’s signed a contract for another year hasn’t he?'
The camera then cut to a bemused Sullivan who said: 'Well, we’ve not had an official word on that yet, so…'
Details of the additional one-year stay should be a formality, with the midfielder keen to remain at Old Trafford.
Mourinho, who was at Wembley on Thursday night to watch England beat Portugal 1-0, wants a core of players and staff who identify with United and values Carrick’s influence, An announcement is expected in the coming days.
