After their failure to land £28m Sanches, Manchester United have made a bad start to their most important transfer window... but which other stars has Woodward allowed to slip through the net?

Manchester United primed for important summer transfer window

boney jimmy: Ed Woodward is primed for the most important transfer window of his Manchester United tenure this summer. The Premier League is becoming even richer next season and as such, the gap between top and bottom narrows further. Yet Woodward does not have the best record when it comes to recruitment. The executive vice-chairman is overseeing a huge overhaul of the transfer process at Old Trafford, but Sportsmail looks at some of the players who have got away during his time in charge.

Ten Premier League moments that left us stunned: From gouge on Costa to Van Gaal's fall - but can they be topped?leicester got title

10. Costa throws bib out the pram
Despite being a player of undoubted ability, Diego Costa has not made a lot of friends in England due to his persistently aggressive approach and petulant behaviour.
Costa was dropped for Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on November 29, with boss Jose Mourinho admitting the pair had 'a few kisses and cuddles' after an argument during their Champions League win at Maccabi Tel Aviv in their midweek fixture.
And during the Spurs match, Costa threw his bib in Mourinho's direction after the Portuguese refused to bring on the Spain striker, instead sending on youngsters Kenedy and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

9. Aguero's five-star display
Manchester City got off to a flying start to the season and their 6-1 thumping of Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium put them back above city rivals United to the top of the Premier League.
But one man stole the show in City's eighth game of term, with Sergio Aguero scoring a miraculous five goals in the space of 20 minutes.
After Aleksandar Mitrovic nodded the Magpies in front in the 18th minute, Aguero replied before half-time in the 42nd, before putting his team in front in the 49th. His eight-minute hat-trick was completed a minute later, before Kevin De Bruyne netted in the 53rd minute.
The Argentine magician then struck again on the hour mark, and once more two minutes later.
Newcastle fans joined the applause as Aguero was subbed off on 66 minutes - no doubt grateful he would not add to his tally.
Yet, despite his early exit, Aguero joined Alan Shearer, Dimitar Berbatov, Andy Cole and Jermain Defoe in the record books for scoring five goals in a single Premier League game.

8. Lescott Mercs up
The less said about Aston Villa's season, the better. The Birmingham-based outfit's dismal relegation means that next season they will be playing outside the Premier League for the first time since its inception in 1992-93.
After finishing rock-bottom, having to discipline first-teamers Jack Grealish and Gabriel Agbonlahor for their off-the-field conduct at separate points in the season, the club faced more negative publicity on Valentine's Day.
Defender Joleon Lescott angered supporters with an incredibly poorly timed tweet after Villa's 6-0 home defeat to Liverpool, as not even two hours after the thrashing he uploaded a picture of a £121,000 Mercedes.
The 26-capped ex-England international insisted that the Twitter post was a 'genuine mistake' and is yet to delete it...

7. Eva's exit
Champions Chelsea took on Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the Premier League season but all did not go to plan as they drew 2-2.
But that was not all that went wrong, as during the match Jose Mourinho launched a tirade at first-team doctor Eva Carneiro after she went to assist Eden Hazard, even though she appeared to be gestured onto the pitch by referee Michael Oliver.
Mourinho was angry because medical treatment meant that the Belgian had to leave the field of play, and the Blues were already down to 10 men due to a red card for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn later had their matchday duties revoked for their role in the incident.
Carneiro left Chelsea in September and is now suing the club for constructive dismissal, while she also has a separate personal legal action against Mourinho for alleged victimisation and discrimination.

6. Loopy Louis takes a dive
Louis van Gaal has not had the best rapport with the Old Trafford faithful this season but he did endear himself to them on February 28.
His side ran out 3-2 winners over Arsenal and he, now famously, dived to the ground while remonstrating with fourth official, Mike Dean.
Unhappy at the perceived theatrics of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez, the United boss made his feelings clear to Dean by mocking the Chile star's actions on the touchline.
His colourful protest drew an enormous cheer from United fans, and even a sporadic and rare outburst of 'Louis Van Gaal's red and white army' from the Stretford End.

5. Battle of the Bridge
Tottenham travelled from north to west London on May 2 knowing that only three points against Chelsea would do to remain in the title race.
Mauricio Pochettino's men flew into a two-goal lead through Harry Kane and Son Heung-min but were pegged back by Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard in the second half, as Leicester City claimed the Premier League top spot without playing on the Monday night.
But the game will not only be remembered for the Foxes' success. Tempers flared in what was a Stamford Bridge cauldron and the match was filled with eye-gouging, tough tackling and brawling.
Spurs became the first team in Premier League history to pick up nine yellow cards in a single game and Chelsea added a further three to give a grand total of 12 bookings.
Pocchettino took it upon himself to separate Danny Rose and Willian on the pitch, while Blues boss Guus Hiddink fell down as both sets of players squared up in the tunnel after the final whistle.
Tottenham's Mousa Dembele was subsequently banned for six matches over his clash with Diego Costa during the bout and both clubs were charged with failing to control their players in the wake of the derby.

4. Vardy's Ruud party
On November 28, Jamie Vardy broke former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's record as he became the first player to score in 11 consecutive Premier League matches.
Vardy wore a special pair of golden boots as he went into the game hoping to eclipse the Dutchman's record, set across two seasons in 2003.
And the Leicester hitman savoured his moment in the 24th minute, running on to Christian Fuchs' pass to strike a low, powerful finish past United keeper David de Gea and send the King Power Stadium wild.
Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised for United but the 1-1 draw will be forever remembered as Vardy's day.

3. Mourinho moves on
In what must be the biggest Premier League shock of 2015, Chelsea sacked manager Jose Mourinho seven months after he led them to the trophy.
Chelsea stormed to the title last spring and won the League Cup, but lost nine of their 16 League games at the start of this season and Mourinho departed with the champions 16th in the table, one point above the relegation places.
The Portuguese's final match was, perhaps ironically, a 2-1 defeat under the lights at leaders Leicester and the 'Special One' left by 'mutual consent' on December 17.
The cracks began to show on August 16 in Chelsea's 3-0 away loss to Manchester City, when Mourinho substituted captain John Terry for the first time in the 177 games he had managed him, and along with the defeats, Mourinho's season was marred by talk of dressing room bust-ups.

2. Bye bye, Boleyn
On May 10, West Ham United marked the departure from their spiritual home of 112 years with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Manchester United at Upton Park.
The scenes before kick-off had been disturbing. United arrived late and their entrance represented a throwback to the hooliganism of the 1980s as while their team bus was blocked on Green Street, it was pelted with bottles, and witnesses talked of a crush.
But on the pitch the 'West Ham Way' - said to be defined as attacking football, going for the jugular - was very much in force as Slaven Bilic's men collected all three points in a dramatic encounter.
The post-match send-off consisting of pyrotechnics, a myriad of former Irons heroes (and The Cockney Rejects) pulled the curtain down on the Boleyn Ground as the club moves to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford next season.

1. Moment Fantastic Foxes got their hands on the trophy
Rather than the craziest moment of the season being an hilarious incident or a controversial episode, 2015-2016's goes to a football club's journey... which is pretty absurd in itself.
From relegation survivors last season, 5000 to one-shots Leicester City did the unthinkable and lifted the Premier League trophy under the guidance of manager Claudio Ranieri.
When the Italian took charge in summer 2015, famous Foxes fan Gary Lineker tweeted: 'Claudio Ranieri? Really? ' such was the supporters' lack of optimism after Nigel Pearson's exit.
But after moulding a hard-working, driven squad with incredible self-belief, togetherness and frightening strength on the counter-attack, the Midlands side really did do the unthinkable.
Worth the wait: Ranieri on first major league title as manager
