There is an interesting parallel between Liverpool's 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League final and the club's 2005 Champions League final victory against AC Milan. As Jerzy Dudek threw his left arm back towards the centre of his goal to repel Andriy Shevchenko's penalty, he handed Liverpool their fifth European Cup and Rafa Benitez his finest achievement as a manager. It is highly likely that whatever Benitez goes on to achieve in his career, people will always remember him for being Liverpool's manager that night. But ahead of that infamous match at the Ataturk Stadium, Benitez's plans to overhaul his squad with fresh faces (including replacing Dudek with Pepe Reina) were at advanced stages, whether his side beat Milan or not.
